How to play Snakes and Ladders

Take a moment with Snakes and Ladders before moving to another game. Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Read the objective before making your first input. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Make the controls familiar

Locate the buttons and input area before beginning a long round. Use the on-screen labels to avoid an accidental restart. Notice the feedback after each input.

Your goal

Reach square 100 exactly. A roll past 100 leaves the token where it is. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Step by step

  1. Player 1 rolls first, starting before square 1.
  2. Move the number of squares shown by the die.
  3. Follow a snake or ladder when landing on its starting square.
  4. Alternate turns until one player reaches 100.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Use the control method described here for this activity. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

A useful example

From square 98, rolling 2 wins. Rolling 3 overshoots and leaves the token at 98. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Verify the rule before continuing.

Watch out for this

A roll of six does not grant an extra turn in this version. Compare the situation with the worked example. Choose one rule to keep in mind for this round. Apply it consistently rather than guessing what another version might allow.
